Lost Shoes Series

There’s a friend of mine who takes photos of lost shoes. I’m not talking about a professional photographer who uses an expensive camera and takes fashion photos of overly-priced designer shoes. 

This friend, he loves to walk and when I say walk, I actually mean wander. He wanders to soothe his soul and clear his mind. Other times he wanders out of impracticality, rash decision-making and dare I say it - blind hope. Of all the things he has ever encountered on his “wanderous” trips, capturing lost shoes has been his favorite.

I guess you don’t really think about shoes so much or think about how much of a necessity they are.  You may not even think of shoes as “lost” because you always encounter them when attached to a person. That person is usually going somewhere. Anywhere. 

In many ways we see ourselves in those lost shoes or, at least, I do.  Sometimes we are literally lost, trying to find our destination and sometimes we are lost in figuring out our next step.

After years of capturing lost shoes, I’m happy to say that my friend has retired. Although he hasn’t quite settled into a home he plans to live in forever, he has found someone he plans to live with forever. In many ways he finally found his destination. 

To all the wanderers and lost souls out there – you’ll find your destination someday just as I hope to find mine as well.
